Iab were approached by the estates department at Leeds Dental Hospital who asked us if ourselves and the architect employed would design for them a Clinical Skills Laboratory. Their requirements were for a spacious teaching area, one of which that was simple and hygienic. This gave them a teaching area for them to use their phantom heads and provided an open space for them to bring in other equipment as needed – while making sure they had space for at least 16 students.

We designed a bespoke oval bench that was big enough to position 8 student stations. Each station required a phantom head, overhead light, PC, monitor, keyboard and mouse. They wanted to keep the work surface clean so we mounted the monitor to the main lighting pole, then created a pull out keyboard and mouse drawer underneath the worktop.

The oval bench was constructed from a steel sub frame with Corian cladded panels and worktop. We also installed a crescent shaped teachers bench in the same style as the student station. This also incorporated a phantom head, storage cupboards and the controls needed for the teacher to demonstrate all the relevant techniques to the students.

As well as installing the above, we installed a small amount of perimeter benching. A standard plinth mounted system was used. The client required a small wash up area, which comprised of an integrated Corian double sink with drainer grooves and under-bench storage.

A requirement from the client was for iab to supply a double gown bin to enable them to easily rid of their disposable lab coats. To tie in with the rest of the installation, we installed a wall bench made up of two plinth mounted cabinets and a Corian worktop – this had a cut out which meant that the gown bin was integrated in the cabinet, making it much cleaner and aesthetically pleasing.
